Question:

Could anyone give me the names of a few good charities that in some way help baby seals?

I have been looking everywhere but I am not sure what I can trust. If anyone can give me information on good or bad (so I know what to stay away from) charities I would appreciate it.

They don't need to be out there shooting poachers; charities that help with education and passing bills are good too, but the more hands on the better. Also I need a non-profit organization.

I want to donate to an organization for a friend's birthday present (he LOVES baby harp seals)

  1. Louiseville slugger baseball bats  have a fund

  2. You need to be very careful about donating to charities trying to save the baby seals.

Greenpeace is the main one.  What most people do not know is that Greenpeace actually caused the death of MORE baby seals than would have been taken by the commercial harvest (slaughter) of the seals.

All those Greenpeace folks ran around (and still do this by the way) spraying the baby seals with red spray paint, to make their pelts worthless.  Guess what that did?  Made them dead easy to spot targets for the polar bears.  Almost 100% of those "saved" baby seals were easy to spot snacks for the polar bears.  If the baby seals had been left alone (not spray painted) and the harvest/slaughter of the seals had gone on as normal, fewer of the baby seals would have died.

Saving the animals (especially adorable baby seals) is a BIG money making business for groups like Greenpeace, and PETA.

Really stop and think about what any groups tactics are going to be, BEFORE you donate.

Also ask yourself what would happen to all those seal pups if the commercial harvest did not go on.  There would be a sudden seal population explosion.  Is there enough for the seals to eat....or will you just be condeming them to a slow death in a few years of starvation, as their population expands?

What will happen to the polar bears, arctic foxes, and  killer whales which will also increase in numbers as the seal population grows?

What will happen to them, if the seal population crashes?  Will more polar bears be shot, as they search for food by human towns?  Will more killer whales be shot as they hunt closer to fishing boats?

All things to think about before making a single donation.

  3. Greenpeace.

  4. IFAW is one that comes to mind, as they have quite a large campaign against seal clubbing. I'm not sure about their rep though, so i'd look into them before getting involved. But stay clear of PETA - they are complete crooks!

  5. There is a website called Care2 that you can go on and click daily to help save baby seals.  No money involved.  Check it out.

  6. My friend, you have a vast world of choices infront of you. I've been an animal rights activist for over 20 years, my best suggestion is to go to Defenders of Wildlife.org. I work with them here in South Florida to save the FL Panther, you can sign my petition if you like at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeactio... , also visit my page and get to know Care2.com at http://www.my.care2.com/eagleray7 . If you check out Defenders, you can actually "adopt" a baby seal for your friend, you will receive a certificate in his name and a very nice stuffed animal. The money you donate will be used for this cause. You can also take a look at IFAW, they are an amazing organization. Any questions feel free to e-mail me, and good luck!
