Unfortunately the answer to your question is yes, BT are the only people you can get a landline from.

When you get your line you will have to pay a charge and then be on a contract, after the contract expires then you can switch to another supplier.

There is telewest but that depends on if they serve your area, also virgin do a fibre optic cable connection service.  

Bt is the most popular, and easily accessible, however.

o2 mobile do good deals on pre-pay mobiles, if you do not wish to have a landline.
