Question:

Could anyone recommend a quality, entry-level road bike?

I'm getting back into cycling thanks to the long evenings and a desire to keep fit. I prefer the road but am currently riding a really knackered, heavy Shogun mountain bike which is sapping my enjoyment! Personal recommendations for a suitable replacement would be welcome; I can spend up to £500.

Thanks in advance.

  1. If you have a Decathlon store in your town, go in and look at their range of road bikes. They make some affordable ones which are quite good.

  2. Your budget should get you an alloy frame equipped with Sora or Tiagra components which are perfectly serviceable for an entry level bike.  If you are not in too much hurry to buy though you can often pick up a clearance bargain for the same price with 105 or even part Ultegra components which will make a lot of difference.

I can't recommend a specific bike at that price but would suggest looking at Focus bikes from the Wiggle web site.  I recently bought one of their road bikes and was very pleased with the quality, level of equipment and the value for money.

  3. here are some that i would consider

    specialized allez triple

    giant TCR

    cannondale synapse 7

    felt f85

scott speedster s40 (i owned one of these and liked it quite a bit)
