  1. It depends entirely on the individual council. I have been checking up on this recently for a friend. Barnet borough does...Loughton borough doesn't although they pay for you to downsize which is utterly ridiculous. It appears its like this all over the country so it would be best to ring the council concerned.

  2. yes and even if you downsize contact your local housing office

  3. some crazy councils were paying tennants money to clean before the house before they leave, this was a local initative and is not done nation wide. You should contact your own coucil to see if they offer any crazy incentive scheme

  4. Well if you were in private accommodation, you wouldn't expect handouts, would you? The last I heard is that if you vacate a three or more bedroom council house to move into one bedroom council accommodation, the council may grant a premium for the release of the bigger property.  The reasoning behind that is to make way for seriously needed family accommodation and reward in some way.  I do not know if that applies when moving to private sector accommodation though. However, this may only apply to my own local council.

  5. no, is the answer to that,

but ask to see a houseing officer at the council

and if that doesnot help speak to your local councillor
