Could dental hygienists open a business?

I go to my dentist twice a year to get my teeth cleaned. I always keep my appointments and never dread going because the girl who cleans my teeth is wonderful! She takes her time, she is gentle and good at cleaning my teeth.

I really don't care for my dentist. He always wants to take x-rays which I don't feel are necessary as often as he suggests. He always wants to give me fluoride treatments etc.

I think it would be GREAT if you could by pass the dentist and just go to get your teeth cleaned. A nice place with sterile equipment of course but more like a saloon. Cleaning, whitening, buy special toothpaste's and brushes etc. If the dental hygienist saw trouble she could recommend you see a dentist. Will anyone ever open a pearly whites saloon? I sure hope so!

  1. Different states have different laws concerning the practice of Dentistry.   I do believe in certain states (California?)  hygienists do have the ability to open their own clinics,  and it's quite common.

In other states,  it is mandatory that no one practice dentistry,  including cleaning teeth,  without a licensed dentist on in the building with them.

Your dream has come true in some states,   but not all.
