Question:

Could having no real family hurt my chances of being a cop?

I've been hearing some departments are becoming a little more selective about their candidates these days. Making sure that they will have some other hobby or activity than the job. So I'm just curious if having no real family and only a few past girlfriends could possibly hurt my chances of being a cop?

  1. f  uck the po-po ho jk jk jk im way to old for that i dont think so but you should find someone to complete ur life whether its a girl or a guy depending on which way u swing . and hope u do become a police officer  cuz someone has to do it

  2. not at all.  Many single officers.  good luck

  3. Nope, they are hiring you, not your family.  They look into what type of person you are.

  4. Your background will be looked at in totality. Simply not having a "real family" would not disqualify you. Some departments have the luxury of be more selective than others. There are departments in California that are constantly seeking qualified police officer candidates. Visit http://www.peaceofficerjobs.com for excellent information and advice about becoming a police officer. The site contains great information about things that could be considered during a background investigation.

  5. It shouldn't hurt your chances.  They are asking about your life because they do not want to hire a 'Tackleberry'.

  6. I don't know about in California, but I wouldn't think so. As long as you have a clean record, education, mental skills and physical ability, I don't see why you wouldn't be a good candidate.  Hope none of your ex girlfriends are psycho...

  7. The psych test is where they get you. Its about 1500 questions long. They do a background check, but it is not your fault if you have a small family. They will check past employers and generally they want to know that you are emotionally/mentally stable. They will even ask people you knew, if you were known to tell offensive jokes.

When my dad went through the police academy (LAPD), he contacted friends and family and even his ex wife (my mom) and let them know they would be getting phones calls. Everyone was pretty supportive and understanding.

If you are a pretty decent guy, have no worries.

  8. I take that you mean you are not married and have no kids right? The answer to this is yes, it will be taken into consideration as with everything else in you background packet. If you do not have a family because of young age, they may dismiss you for not having enough "life experience". Or, if you are older and still do not have a family, they may question why as well. Ultimately, it all depends on who you are and if they want to get rid of you, they will.

If that one that could be trouble is because you physicaly hit her or roughed her up like grabbed her hard in anger, you should try to find another job. Thats death in this job.
