Ok someone on Craigslist bought a universal laptop charger for me, it works, the light turns on and everything, but it is not compatible with his laptop now and he wants his money back. Everyone knows that things on Craigslist are sold as-is, right? He keeps calling and calling....could he notify the police? Is what I'm doing illegal?

  1. It's a civil matter.  The police do not have the authority to do anything about it.  The police can not order or make you return the money nor make him return the charger.  That would be depriving you of your property without due process of law.  The person who bought it would have to take you to court to get his money back, but he has no case so as long as you didn't misrepresent the item being sold in any way.  As long as it was represented truthfully, he has no case against you, it's on him to make sure before hand that it will indeed work with his laptop.  It would be the same as going to a yard sale and you buy a computer without first asking if you can plug it in and take a look at it for a few minutes.  They're not claiming that it works, they have it for sale, you can't sue them cause you didn't do the research and made an uninformed purchase.  Now, what you can do the next time he calls, answer the call, and tell him, Do not call you any more, you are not going to return the money, the item was sold as is.  Tell him if he continues to call, he is committing a crime.  It's called harrasment, and he is using a federal regulated utility to do such.  If he threatens to call the police or to sue, ignore him.  He's trying to sound big and bad.  Hope this helps.

  2. He can call the police if he wants - they're not going to do anything.

But he might be able to sue you if you weren't clear about the description in the ad.  He'd have to give the charger back if he won.

  3. he can call the cops but they wont do anything. nothing can be done at all.
