Question:

Could high temperatures cause a pool cue to warp?

I have heard by some other more experienced players that leaving a cue in a vehicle for an extended period of time will cause the cue to warp, regardless of whether it's in a hard case or soft case. Is this true and if so how long can you safely leave it in a vehicle and at what kind of temperatures would cause warping? I bought a Lucasi Sneaky Pete that has slightly warped after I left it in a 2 butt/4 shaft hard case all the time in the back of my truck. Now I bring my case with me if I'm going to be away from my truck for a long time.

  1. Extreme temperature and humidity levels and changes are bad. For this reason, I even wonder how bad shipping cues is for them. A case won't protect it a cue from this for very long, whether it's hard or soft.

  2. OH Yeah I have gone from the trunk to the trash can with a few Not the butt so much but the shaft

  3. Yes. It's true. Never leave your cue out in (the elements) your car. Temperature and moisture fluctuations are not good for your cue, no matter what kind of case you have. Pool cue shafts and tips, are very tempermental.

(The same holds true for guitars --minus the shaft and tip).

  4. absolutely

  5. It's just a good practice NOT to leave your cue exposed to heat or cold for prolonged periods of time. Try this exercise. Put an empty coke bottle out in the sun on a hot day and when the heat is peaking, pick up the bottle and feel how pliable it is. Especially after being outside for a few days. Your cue will respond to the heat in same manner. The grain in wood is pliable and has memory, if you will. So, if your cue is hot AND has something resting on it or it's propped up and has the ability to sag, that's what will happen. Almost permanently.
