On a larger watershed scale, do a google search on Anna Hazare's Ralegaon Siddhi project - whereby a formerly barren arid area near Parner, Ahmednagar Distt, Maharashtra, has been transformed into a lush green self sufficient oasis with a very high water table.  I have seen the place myself, it stands out from its surrounding areas, it looks like Kerala transplanted in the desert.  Apparently this was achieved through simple watersheds, digging of small check dams, recharging of existing wells, massive tree plantation and consequent raising level of the water table; all using local  labour volunteered by the villagers.  It is an example worth emulating all over India, but the politicians will never allow it, because there is more money to be made in mega dam projects wasting the tax payers funds but increasing the politicians and bureaucrats funds.

well, to conserve water u can install a rain water harvesting plant.....the BMC helps. try not to leave taps open. wash vegetables and fruits in a bowl of water rather than in running water and use the same water for your plants...........helps a lot!................small efforts can ake a big differnce!
