  1. Probably no more chance than someone with no history of cancer in their family.

Hereditary cancer is rare - only 5 - 10% of all cancer cases are hereditary.

A family history of a number of different cancers does not suggest a hereditary factor. The main sign of a cancer being hereditary is for several family members to have had the same type of cancer.

Skin, sinus and testicular cancer are not hereditary, and several members of your family having different cancers does not increase the chance of you developing cancer

As far as breast cancer is concerned, only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary, the rest are random. With one in nine women getting breast cancer at some time in their lives, it isn't unusual for more than one woman in the same family to develop non-hereditary breast cancer.

You would be at increased risk if your grandmother carried one of the two known faulty genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) responsible for hereditary breast cancer, and their child - one of your parents - had inherited it. I which case you would have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene. Inheriting the gene would not mean you would definitely get breast cancer - one in five women who inherit the gene don't.

If one of your parents does not carry one of the BRCA genes, then you are not at significantly increased risk.

Cancers that are diagnosed after the age of 50 are less likely to be hereditary

Two of my grandparents, my aunt, my uncle and my cousin all died from non-hereditary cancers. Both my parents had cancer, and my mother died of it - again, both non-hereditary cancers. Of my parents' six children, now aged between 46 and 60, I am the only one to have developed cancer. And mine too was not hereditary.

So my family has a strong history of cancer. But there has been no hereditary cancer in my family. No members of my immediate or extended family are regarded as at increased risk of any of the cancers. With one in three people developing cancer at some point in their lives, it isn't unusual for a number of people in the same family to have had cancer, but it's rare for any cancer to run in a family

Good luck tomorrow. Bear in mind that most breast lumps aren't cancerous, and most cancerous breast lumps don't hurt.

Also that 80% 0f those diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50, it's rare in women under 40 and very rare in women as young as you.

  2. Probably a good chance sadly enough. Hopefully im wrong, and good luck at the Doc tommorow. I wish you all the best.

  3. Okay look lots of women get sore b*****s and lumps and its never any thing there are lots of little ducts ect there that can cause lumps!! what age are you? I know its hard but worry wont solve anything u will know tomorrow what the doc thinks and it could be nothing!!!

And u know what if u do have it well u found the lump, u caught it so ur chances are fantastic!!!If i were u 2day id just relax eat choc and watch funny dvds u will be okay be strong and positive ok if u need to talk email me lol let me know how u get on!!

  4. well in what i know you can also get breast cancer by bumping it to other places and some say that it is from the history of your family maybe you really need to ask the doctor to know your problem to make sure if you have or none.

and if you don't really have a breast cancer just remember to take care of your breast and always eat healthy foods!

oh yes they really hurt before you have your period it may be a sign that you will have your period.

  5. There's a good chance you'll get it. Congratulations!

  6. with the family history of Cancer you should get checked...good luck and let us know how you made out

  7. i hope not =(

  8. Try not to work yourself up just yet.

A harmless cyst feels much the same.

You would be incredibly unlucky if it is cancer, you are being wise to check it out anyway given you Grandmother's outcome.

Take things one day at a time, and good luck.
