  1. Most of the time, you wouldn't want to hook your amp directly up to the computer. The sound you get from an amplified guitar is the product of the guitar, amp, FX, speaker+cabinet, and microphone. Some guitar amps do have monitor outputs, which could be used for this purpose (run this output, probably on a 1/4" phono plug, to your PC's sound card, which probably has a 1/8" phono plug.. you can find adaptors at any good music store or Radio Shack).

If you have the resources to play in a room where you can mic your amp, that's your best bet. The built-in sound card on most PCs won't support very good microphones, and that's your next problem. The best bet here is to get an audio interface for your PC with built-in 1/4" and XLR jacks to support higher quality condenser and dynamic mics. I use a Tascam US-122.. the modern version of this is the Tascam US-122L, and there are dozens of others, usually hooking in via USB.

A better alternative, depending on much you love your specific amp, may be one of Line 6's guitar interfaces. There are several different models of the "GuitarPort" and "TonePort", which is a USB interface that accepts a 1/4" plug directly from your guitar. The interface includes amp, FX, cabinet and modeling software, which runs on your PC, to allow you to model a wide variety of guitar/speaker/mic/amp combinations. These are fairly low cost (under $100, depending on version).  I used to use one of these, until I bough the Line 6 FloorPod XT Live, which delivers this kind of modeling in a pedalboard, and also allows recording through a USB interface.

  2. if your amp has an AUX out, plug the AUX out to the LINE IN on the computer. Radio sHack has all the parts needed.
