Question:

Could i mix betta fish breeds?

Would that be safe to do?Would it be hard keeping the lines clean though? Also what type of bettas should i breed as a beginner?

I want to feed them mosquito larve..what other high quality food should i feed them before breeding?

  1. Betta's are not easy to breed, you could end up with 100 fish that all need to be kept in separate containers and there is no market for them unless you are raising something very special to sell to private breeders.  Better off to get a few guppies if you want to raise some fish for your own personal enjoyment.

  2. As a beginner into breeding fish, I suggest not starting with bettas, have a read through these:

    By mixing breeds I presume you mean tail types, yes you can but without in depth knowledge of betta genetics (it gets very complex) then I would suggest not as you'll end up with a bunch of fugly bettas! Some betta species will hybridise, but the only easily acquired species is Betta splenden, you can only get wild types through other breeders, imbellis for example hybridises with splendens.


  3. I agree with the Top Contributer (Whatzthename?). Bettas are rather hard to breed. Id do something a bit easier first, then, as u get more confidence, start the bettas. Try testing out the same breeds, and begin to experiment with mixing breeds.
