My 25-month-old has been waking up in the middle of the night coughing for about a month now. It is becoming increasingly more frequent and is really starting to disrupt everyone's sleep. He does not have a cold nor is he congested. He does not cough at all during the day. He has been fussy (which I attributed to his age) and has had loose stools for a couple of weeks. The doctor listened to his chest last week and said it sounds clear.

Could this coughing be explained by increased saliva production due to teething? (He won't let me in there to feel around though!) Has anyone noticed their child hacking/coughing at night because of teething?

  1. This is how we found out my nephew had allergies.   If it doesn't happen during the day he might be allergic to something in his room - if he has a pillow try replacing it or covering it with a good quality hypo allergenic pillow cover.  If he sleeps with stuffed animals you could put them in ziploc bags and put them in the freezer for 24 hours, vacuum his room with a hepa vacuum, get rid of the rugs if he has any, etc.  Good Luck.
