Could las vegas ever be taken back by the desert?

in the movie resident evil, the sand dunes have taken over the cityagain. i lived in vegas. never saw a sand dune in my life. what would really happen if it were abandoned ?

  1. I don't think you have anything to worry about.


  2. - They were using some poetic license. This kind of high desert has not changed substantially for millions of years. If the people were gone I imagine that the dam would break down in a few years and the place would simply dry up.

    - Worldwide the prevention of sand dunes from overwhelming cities and agricultural areas has become a priority for the United Nations Environment Programme. Sand threatens buildings and crops in Africa, the Middle East and China. Drenching sand dunes with oil stops their migration, but this approach is highly destructive to the dunes habitat and uses a finite resource. Sand fences might also work, but researchers are still analyzing optimum fence designs.  

  3. I don't think you really have to worry about that....If it were ever just abandoned, it would take a hundred years or so for it to disappear. Probably much longer than that.

    There is more of a chance of the Gulf taking land back, low lying areas such as New Orleans.

  4. The desert would not want it.  If hit with a nuclear blast, there are few tunnels.
