Question:

Could my betta fish have a ronivirus?

I have two cats at home. In the past, they would use my fish's bowl as their local watering hole, until I decided that my new kitten might try to eat the poor betta and got a lid for the bowl.

Soon after getting the bowl a lid, I noticed that my fish seemed to be declining in health, but thought maybe it would clear up with some fresh food and a change of water. It did not clear up and at this point, he is basically dying (deteriorating fins, raised scales, and sores on his body and gills).

I recently found out that my two cats have coronavirus and read online that fish can carry a virus of the same family called ronivirus. Is there any way that either A: my fish gave my cats a virus or B: my cats gave my fish a virus?

  1. they need to breathe.

  2. Beta fish need air to breathe.  Putting a lid on the bowl probably closed off the air supply for the fish and that's why it's dying.  Did you every notice the Beta fish may be swimming around the bottom of the bowl but then it eventually comes to the top?  It comes up there to actually breathe the air.

What you also can do, like how mine was given to me as a gift, mine is in a wide mouth vase and has those green, leafy plants in a special top, atop the vase.  The plants grow roots right into the water and it looks cool and you have a living plant too.  Occassionally, you do have to cut the roots or they get too long.  That's OK for the plant though.
