Could my blank CD-R's be bad?

I have a sleeve of blank CD-R discs, my computer has major issues and I need to reinstall Windows, but before I do that i need to back up everthing on discs, after saving about a dozen discs, filtering out every 2nd disc because the drive didn't recognize it and told me there was no disc in the drive or that my disc was full or no longer usable..... what do I do now? I really need to finish up this saving process, have about 10 more photo folders to save and a dozen Word files, plus all of my iTunes to back up too! Please help.

To be safe I would suggest backing up to an external hard drive. Buy or borrow one to use. It will be safer and faster.
