Question:

Could my dog have diabetes?

We have an eight year old lab/dalmatian/hound mix. She's been really good about going to the bathroom outside, but lately she's been having accidents. About five or six weeks ago she had her first - she peed twice in the house during the night. Last night she had her second accident, this time she only peed once during the night. My mom also made the comment that she's been drinking a lot lately. However, I've been home all week and she doesn't really drink that much, but she does seem to gulp down a good bit of water at night before bedtime. We've been having one problem after another with a lot of our pets, so I don't know if I'm over-reacting or what, but should I be concerned about diabetes? She doesn't seem to have lost any weight and I don't notice a sweet smell to her breath, either. So, am I over-reacting and they were only accidents, or should I have her tested for diabetes? It just seems odd, eight years of no accidents, and now two accidents within a little over a months time. Is there anything else I should be worried about? Sorry if this seems stupid to some people but, like I said, we've been dealing with one health problem after another with our pets lately, so I've been worrying a lot more about all of them. Hopefully I'm just over-reacting, but I'd really like some other people's opinions. Thanks!

  1. no

  2. Try asking a Vet.

I'm glad I'm not your dog.

  3. TYes, it most definietely could.

  4. may i ask what you are feeding?

  5. my border collie had diabeties the only indication was she was drinking a lot.take your dog to the vet a blood test will detect this good luck hope your dog will be ok.

  6. Her incontinence could simply be because she's aging.  If she can't make it through the night, then someone needs to get up and let her out.

If she's drinking more water, then she needs to be checked out immediately.  Increased bllod sugar can lead to death in a short period of time.

Better to get her checked out and have youe mind at ease.

  7. Your dog is growing older and her body is changing. There are numerous possibilities such as kidney or bladder infections, thyroid problems and yes, diabetes. Has there been any blood in her urine? Has she urinated more often than usual? There is also the possibility of stones. i would definitely recommend a trip to her vet for an exam and testing. whatever it is it will give you the opportunity to nip it in the bud. Good luck.

  8. She may also have a urinary  infection. I would take her to the vet esp. since her symptoms have gone on for so long.I do not think your are over-reacting. Dog can get Diabetes as well.Call the vet.
