  1. When you are a professional gambler you are not in it to win the vary hand you are playing, professional poker players, play and fold there hands based on mathematically ideal rules, in a single evening of poker it is close to 50/50 on whoever will win, but if you placed your mom in 1000 consecutive tournaments alongside the said pro it is almost 100% certain your mom would be a loser while the pro would be a winner in the sum of all the wins and losses, that is what makes him a pro.

  2. If you do something for a living that's your profession.....

  3. poker is a game of luck, however you can push luck to your side y playing the odds. if you put your money in the pot when the odds are on your side you have a good shot, but it always comes down to luck.

a 2 and 3 can beat aa any time, you never know

  4. Question #1: Depends what you mean.  At one hand?  Sure, anyone can do that.  At one game?  Highly unlikely, but possible.  Over the course of a year?  It would take a miracle.

Question #2:  By making a living playing the game.

  5. With that attitude, any pro would LOVE to have you or your mum sit at their table!

  6. when there making alot of money playing cards. oh and also they get sponsored.

  7. In the short term over the course of a few hands, or even a couple hours, poker is a game of luck.  Anyone can beat anyone if they catch lucky.  However, over the long term, skill takes over.  The ability to read an opponent, know the odds, when to bet, push all-in, and fold, when you can play marginal hands like A-10, that A-10 IS a marginal hand, and everything else you need to know to be successful takes over.  If you're not a good player, luck plays a bigger factor in it because you don't know those things, but if you understand those concepts, you bring the luck factor way down.

So to answer your question, yes, your mom might be able to win a couple pots against a pro, and even finish up one night,.  But if she plays at a table with even good players who aren't pros 10 times, she'll lose her money at least 9 of those times.  You think they all suck because you don't understand any of those concepts.

  8. I play professionally, Email me and we can arrange weekly heads up games.

  9. A pro is someone who plays poker for a living.  The last pro to win the main event at the WSOP was in 2001 and it was Carlos Mortensen.  That is not to say that professionals don't do good in poker, it is saying that the fields have just gotten huge (also when one wins the main event they tend to become professionals).

I have seen folks answer that poker is a game of luck, that is not all together true, luck does play a part in how one does, but skill plays a bigger part.  One needs the skill to survive long enough to get lucky in a tournament. I have played against professionals both live and online, and have put them out in  tournaments, that doesn't mean I am better, just means I was meant to win that particular hand.  Over the long term I am a winning player, however I am not a pro, I play every chance I can, and I love it, I just don't know how it would effect me to have to play all the time.

As with all forms of gambling, whether we talk about games of pure chance or games of skill (poker more so the later catagory) the long term results are what matters, not the short term.

  10. Most of the top pros have earned more than a million dollars playing poker, in fact they make a living at it, hence the term pro.

So if they suck and your mum could beat them all, how many millions has she made?  How many WPT titles or WSOP bracelets does she have?

Because really, until she has made a few million, no one is going to acknowledge that she is better than them.

Scott A: That is a really silly point of view.  Tiger Woods can hit the most amazing shot of his career and right at that moment a gust of wind catches the ball and puts it into a water hazard.  Does that mean golf is a game of luck?

Poker is a skill game, which is why the top professionals have made so much money at it.  A true game of luck is roulette, and you don't see professional roulette players, because over time the game cannot be beaten.
