We were talking about connotations and how if you use a word a certain way, it can sound negative.

Ex.

Senior Citizen-- Positive.

Elderly-- Neutral.

Old-- Negative.

And she gave us another example that kind of pissed my off.

g*y (Happy)-- Positive.

g*y (Homosexual)-- Negative.

And she put a frowny face beside the second one.

Could she get in trouble for this?

  1. No I actually think this a fair statement on her part, whether she's homophobic or not.  There are certain subconscious reactions that people have to certain words.  I find that almost any minority will give you that kind of reaction, unless of course you're part of that group.

This isn't to mean that people REACT to these involuntary reactions, or base any judgments on it.  But it's just something that can't be helped.  I'm g*y and I won't lie saying that just a negative impression jumps into my head when I hear, or say that.  Just like saying someone is "old."  It's no necessarily a bad thing, there is just a certain reaction that it invokes.

  2. Using it in a negative context like that is something she SHOULD get into trouble for.  But, to be realistic, she won't likely get into trouble for it.

  3. I don't think she meant being g*y (was bad) i think she meant that some people use it as a negative way to define a person. Like using the "n" word to describe an African American.

  4. Unfortunately, I've yet to see a teacher get in trouble over something like this. One of my teachers was really bigoted and would punish black kids for talking when the whole class was being rowdy... She also stated that the men in Shakespeare's plays stated they loved each other "like friends. Not like lovers because that's wrong.".

My friend who was black and g*y eventually got fed up and started skipping her class because the school didn't believe she was saying those things.

  5. No matter what the intention of the teacher, it -is- true, that in society calling a heterosexual person g*y is negative.  It's negative to both the heterosexual target, and to homosexuals in different ways.

It's insulting to the homosexual that the word is being used in a negative way, and it's insulting to the target, simply because they aren't.

I have a friend who calls basically everything negative, g*y, and it's very irritating.

Edit: It's, talking simplistically, roughly the same as calling a white person 'black', or a non-Jewish person a Jew.  It's all harassment of both the target and original.

Taken black-and-white, what the teacher did is offensive.  Taken with a grain of salt, the teacher is -right-.

  6. it all depends just ask the principal

  7. she is basicly stating g*y is wrong..i would tell someone..

  8. Yea. That's discrimination.

  9. ROFFFFLLLLLLLLL

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    i cant stop laughing.

that ***** is so stupid to put up sumthin liek that.

  10. SHE SHOULD! That is homophobic! She is saying it is wrong and/or sad to be homosexual!

  11. Unfortunately, probably. Though I doubt that your teacher is a homophobe, she should have chosen her words more carefully.
