  1. interesting question. they should not be. culture and history are primary organs when it comes to a country and its standing in the world. however, i remember being in yugoslavia in 1992 and noticing the way in which prejudice seemed to be inherited from one generation to the next. in that sense, it can be a burden.

in the uk? well, don't get me started on the monarchy! i mean, i'm not entirely against (there are a lot of great aspects to rituals and traditions and pageantry) and i don't think i have a good grip on what it signifies for the british (as i am not one of them) but i do think their financial affairs are somewhat suspect and not always justifiable.

in order for a country to move forward these things need to be understood well within their context rather than used as weapons (for instance, the way the sun attempts to wield patriotism as a weapon against immigration).

i hope i understood your question correctly. if not, don't be scared of adding some detail and/or telling me off :)

  2. Take for example China and the US.

China prides for old and profound cultures and that bounds the country to all sorts of strong fetters. The tradition of ancestor worship and patriarchal domination creates the burden of surplus of boys, and more seriously one boy in each family, which will lead to more and more serious problems.

While a new nation like the US, despite other problems, she is going ahead in offering a modern pattern of tolerance, democracy, freedom, especially freedom of religion, of speech and of thought....Lots of discoveries and inventions are achieved by US citizens and residents.

    GU-UN

  3. The only thing that stops the UK from going forward are the near sited politicians (all parties). I am proud of our past and relish all our influences upon the world. Half of the planet might still be in the stone ages if it weren't for us.
