With each expansion and contraction taking 30 or 40 billions of years!

  1. currently scientist do not think that will happen it is because as we all know the universe is expanding and when something expands that means there is something new there and that is dark energy which is what causes the universe to expand and sence the universe is expanding there is more dark energy coming into the universe which is making it expand faster and faster. now for your theroy to happen dark matter which pulls everything in and stops expansion there would have to be more dark matter then drak energy which we all ready know isnt true sence dark energy makes up a majority of the matter in the universe

  2. Maybe but we have no way of knowing.

What we do know is that the (present) universe appears insufficiently dense to stop the expansion.  Meaning:  gravity of all the matter in the universe on all the other matter in the universe is insufficient to stop the expansion.

Unless you can think of another mechanism to bring about the Big Crunch, the idea of an oscillating universe is quickly fading.

  3. I believe that is a big question that is being studied right now. With the current rate of expansion there does not appear to be enough matter to pull everything back to one lump. Dark matter would be matter not visible to us but if enough exists it could be enough to draw all the matter back. I hope i have insurance to cover that when it happens.

  4. The idea of a cyclical, big bang/big crunch universe has, I think, been pretty much laid to rest.  There isn't enough mass in the universe to halt its expansion.  There are speculations about dark matter and dark energy making up some of the "missing mass" but so far it seems as if the universe will just keep expanding.

  5. i'm with u, even though i think it was me that came up with the theory but its the only one that makes sense

  6. We have no way of knowing!

  7. It COULD be, but there is currently no evidence to suggest that it's true, and there IS evidence that contradicts it (increasing expansion rate of the universe) so it's not a favorable theory right now.
