Question:

Could regular shafts (vs. more stiff) cause shots to go right?

I just purchased R7 draw irons and now my shots are going right. I did not slice my old irons as much as these. Could the shafts which are regular shafts be causing the problem? What is the typical ball flight if shafts are not stiff enough?

  1. It could be the shaft, since it is softer it is flexing more at the top of your swing, then when you make impact if you have real fast hands, the clubhead might not have caught up yet, leaving the face wide open - thus the slice.  It could be lot of other things though too.

  2. A regular shaft is for slower club head speed so if you have a quick down swing than yes you might slice it every time .I use a stiff shaft because of my club head speed.

  3. A shaft that is not stiff enough could potentially spray the ball all over the place, but is more likely to send the ball left. But yes, it's possible.

If the clubs are the problem, it's actually more likely they are too upright rather than not stiff enough. If the clubs are too upright, the heel of the clubhead will be too high at impact and will put right hand spin on the ball.

FYI, Whomever gave me thumbs down are idiots who have no idea what they're talking about.

  4. Usually a regular shaft swung by fast arms will cause the ball too hook, an over stiff shaft swung by slow arms will block and slice th ball... Is the ball being blocked right??.. or is it being pulled left an slicing back, or going straight and then slicing ??...

  5. Usually when you slice it is because you are swinging across the ball. Your swing isn't square. If this just started with new clubs, it is more than likely the weight of the club that causes the slice.

  6. Sure, it's entirely possible. I would assume that you have two different shaft manufacturers therefore what may be labeled as regular by one manufacturer may actually be stiff by another manufacturers criteria. There is no standard across the industry.
