Question:

Could roaches be coming from my neighbor below me?

I recently moved into and apartment. Everything was fine than I noticed a roach, and i knew if you see one theres more. I also noticed my downstairs neighbors are indian which i have no problem with, but they make food that stinks up the whole apartment building top to bottom and it actually creeps through to my kitchen (same floor plans) now could these roaches be coming from downstairs because of the constant odor that is through the apartment building. I am the closest to them compared to other apartments, and my kitchen is directly above theirs, and thats the only place I see them. Someone please help so I know what action to take here.

Thanks!

  1. How many roaches have you seen? Has it been one every now and then, or multiple sightings?

Are these the giant cockroaches, like waterbugs, or are these the smaller cockroaches?

Sometimes waterbugs get into the apartment because of stormy weather. But it may be because of your downstairs neighbors, especially if they cook a lot and don't clean up afterwards.

I would advise against getting an exterminator to come; it usually makes things worse and it really isn't effective. That has been my experience with the pest control the apartment complexes bring in. Of course, if the exterminators spray your apartment and the downstairs apartment....that might help...a little.

Let your apartment know about your concerns. Ask them if they can spray your apartment AND the apartment downstairs. Then get you some of the Raid Max in the blue and silver can. That stuff will kill the cockroaches (and ants, spiders, and any other pests) quickly and will keep killing them for months. The spray is kind of strong, but if you spray the perimenter of your home and leave (kind of like fumigation), it works wonders!

Don't waste money on roach motels and traps, fumigators, and just plain old roach spray. Invest in the Raid Max because it  is the best! I have used it for years and it IS the most effective at killing bugs on contact---especially if you have an infestation (like the ant infestation I had at my school) and keeping them at bay.

  2. They could be coming from there or anywhere else in the building.

Hire an exterminator to come and spray your apartment (monthly , if they keep coming back).  It won't kill all the roaches, but it should keep them out of your apartment.

Roaches tend to go where they aren't being exterminated.

  3. Tell Management now or have 1,000's later!

You have every right to complain about roaches and excess curry too! So Gross!

This is North America! Take it back or it will be taken over!

  4. Roaches commonly live in and travel through the

kitchen pipe chases, (Vertical pipe spaces).

Kitchens are normally grouped one above the other

to simplify the plumbing of apartment buildings.

Once they're in there, it's a job for an exterminator.

All an individual tenant can do is chase them around,

and they'll soon be back. You can try to seal them

in there, but it's a losing battle.

    Call the landlord.

  5. Roaches aren't attracted to odor - they are after food - the traditional kind and not so traditional (paper and other trash).  Yes, they can come from your neighbors - might be the ones below you but could as easily be someone else in the building.  Talk to management asap to try to stay on top of the infestation - they need to get pest control in there... roaches bereed like, well, roaches :)

  6. 1 roach or hundreds??

If its just 1- squash it.

    If its many--- move.

If you do move.....make sure you inspect every peice of clothing and furniture and seal it up before you move it to a new location. If you take a bug with you- you will soon have many more.

  7. They could be coming from your neighbors, but they also could be coming in with your stuff. If you used cardboard boxes to move your stuff they could have been in that, or even from the paper shopping bags from the grocery store. I have even seen them in the mesh bags that hold potatoes. I would go and get some roach spray to use now and try to get rid of them before your home gets invaded by them.
