My daughter is 6 months and started solids about 1.5 weeks ago, since yesterday she has been straining really hard to go to the toilet, she screams when she is pushing and a small patch of dark yellow liquid comes out with tiny lumps of her normal poo but also a slight mucus with streaks of blood, she is doing this quite frequently as she is obviously needing to do a poo but cant!this morning she did a normal poo with no screaming but it had a slight amount of blood in it but now she is back to screaming and doing small amounts. She isnt off her food or milk and is happy and her normal self, she takes a few sips of water after her solids but not very much, she is also teething at the minute, i have her booked in to see the doctor but am just curious if anyone else has experienced this while i am waiting to go to the doctors, thanx!

  1. It does sound like she's pretty constipated.  What kind of solids is she getting? Some are more binding than others.  If she's getting rice cereal or applesauce or bananas, I'd try switching to oatmeal or peaches or veggies.  If she's still constipated, I'd just stop solids for a month or so, to give her system a chance to mature a bit more.

  2. Babies sometimes get constipated when solids are introduced to their system. Your doctor will likely advise you to give her some watered-down prune juice in her bottle if she takes a bottle or to give her some prunes, but she may not be ready for prune solids yet.

Rest assured that it is very normal for the constipation to happen with the introduction of solids and that there are some different things your doctor will be able to advise you to do to help her along.

  3. im pretty sure most baby's get constipated wen r being weaned on to solids, ur doin the rite thing by takin her drs tho as im pretty sure she shudnt b bleedin! try givin her little bits of pure apple juice just 2 try mak it abit softer 4 her in the mean time!

  4. Yes, i experienced this with all 3 of my children, my first baby especially, as soon as they started on solid food. My first is now 40 years old and still  has problems with constipation. They have all found what foods make them go easier, with my first it is boiled onions, my second it is any fruit juice and my son finds eating oranges is the only things that makes him go easier. You need to look at her diet and note down what foods she has eaten when she goes normally and include that regularly in her diet.

Seeing the doctor is a good thing to put your mind at rest.

  5. If she's still straining but not doing, put a baby-size glycerine suppository in her, or a homemade soap one if you haven't got any in stock: it'll make her do a big dooey in 5-15 minutes!

  6. my daughter didn't have the blood or mucus, but was severely constipated. she cried and screamed....did u know that children under 12 months shouldn't drink milk? thier digestive system can not process it. formula is ok, but not cows milk.
