Question:

Could somebody define exactly what it means to be "Pro-Abortion" and "Pro-Choice". How they differ?

Have you ever come across anybody on any forums or walks of life who is an advocate of abortion as a panacea for all of society's ills.

"Pro" doesnt mean "I regard it as the panacea and all encompassing solution". I am "pro" development means I am not against development. If I was "con" development I would be against it.

I am learning English.

  1. "Pro Abortion" was renamed "Pro Choice".  "Anti Abortion" was renamed "Pro Life".  The US "War Department" was renamed the "Department of Defense."  Same thing, but the new names are more politically correct.

  2. Pro-abortion people tend to believe that abortion is the best option for unwanted children. They tend to site statistics about adoption as reasons for their views (ex. older children, disabled children, minorities, and boys have lower adoption rates).

Pro-choice people may personally disagree with abortion but they don't believe the government should intervene with women's reproductive rights.

  3. I've seen pro-lifers who are that way because they are inherently misogynistic and think that forcing a woman to go through an unwanted pregnancy is a way to punish her for having s*x. Those are the ones who think the fetus has more rights than of the woman and if there is a health problem, it's better to sacrifice her life than that of the fetus. Then they stop caring what happens after it is born.

  4. Since you are learning English, I would point out that the difference between the two is less about the technical definition of each term and more about usage.

Some people will use the terms pro-choice and anti-choice to make their argument, and this is very effective, since they are using the same root word and simply choosing different prefixes.    It's easy to understand what each term means.

In using the terms pro-life and pro-abortion in an argument, you see that there are two different root words and the prefix is the same.   It can be confusing, because the root word is supposed to be more significant than the prefix, and to have 2 roots makes it difficult to know what point the argument is making.

Some people choose words for the purpose of eliciting emotion in the argument, to try to disarm their opponent in the debate.  The use of the term pro-abortion is such an attempt.   These folks would like to pretend that the terms pro-choice and pro-abortion are interchangeable, but they really are not.

In usage, pro-abortion makes the person seem to PROMOTE abortion in just about any circumstances, as if all pregnancies should be terminated.  That is pretty inflammatory and offensive to those person's who simply seek to keep abortion legal as a legitimate option for women to choose, just as RU486 and adoption are legitimate choices.

  5. Pro-choice encompasses ALL the issues that deal with a woman's reproduction and fertility, and that does include abortion, but it also includes a woman being able to NOT get an abortion if she doesn't want an abortion:

    >>Pro-choice describes the political and ethical view that a woman should have complete control over her fertility and pregnancy. This entails the guarantee of reproductive rights, which includes access to sexual education; access to safe and legal abortion, contraception, and fertility treatments; and legal protection from forced abortion. Individuals and organizations who support these positions make up the pro-choice movement.

Some people who are pro-choice see abortion as a last resort and focus on a number of situations where they feel abortion is a necessary option. Among these situations are those where the woman was raped, her health or life (or that of the fetus) is at risk, contraception was used but failed, or she feels unable to raise a child. Some pro-choice moderates, who would otherwise be willing to accept certain restrictions on abortion, feel that political pragmatism compels them to oppose any such restrictions, as they could be used to form a slippery slope against all abortions.[1]<<

I would think that pro-abortion people are supporters of safe and legal abortions, and aren't necessarily out there telling every single woman that has an unwanted pregnancy that the only/best solution is abortion.

  6. In the detached theater of debate, "Pro-choice" means that someone believes that a woman should have the "right" to have their child aborted.  "Pro-abortion" means that someone is an advocate of abortion as a panacea for all of society's ills.

In the real world, the 2 terms are interchangeable, with "Pro-abortion" holding the edge in defining reality.

Pro-lifers are just what their name says.  They believe that all innocent life is important, and that a mother and her unborn child should not be put into the mythological adversarial position that the other side likes to give vent to.  They believe in presenting a mother with all viable options that give her, and her unborn child, the best chance in life.  They see the mother and child in their proper picture, equal partners in dealing with life.

"Pro-choice" is a euphemism to hide the fact that they are actually pushing abortion onto a society that, by nature, tends to try to protect the innocent and oppressed.  Mothers are duped into seeing their unborn child as a leech, a road block to a life of sunshine and roses, a life they cannot have as long as that evil "symbiote" is in their body.

  7. Pro Choice is someone who feels the right to an abortion is the choice of them woman; there is no "pro abortion", those who are pro choice are not advocating abortion, just the right to choose one.

  8. what take a number said

  9. Just some good old fashion spinning, since the idea of Killing unborn children is disgusting to most people, they have changed the term to pro choice to "neuter" the emotional impact of the idea

  10. anti-abortion folks are really anti-CHOICE (but only for OTHER people, not for themselves)

  11. To be pro-choice means a woman has the right to do with her own body as she sees fit; to be pro-Life means the fetus has a right to live, and if that fetus is female, it then has no rights if it gets pregnant... Now wait a minute... How can that be?
