i have just been to the opticians and my results have come back:

right eye sphere 050

cyl 2.00

axis 108

left eye sphere 0.50

cyl 1.75

axis 176

im more interested in the explanation of the axis as the numbers seem quite far apar could someone please explain this very simply does it mean my right eye is weak?? thank you

  1. If you imagine your eye to have the numbers of a clock face, your right eye's astigmatism is located between 11 and 12 o'clock.  The left eye is located at 3 o'clock.  They are perpendicular to each other, though while not common, not unheard of, either.  You actually have a high-moderate amount of astigmatism, but both eyes are approximately the same level of weakness.

  2. The axis, it is just a rotation of the lens, unlike the sphere and cyl, the higher the number does not mean the worse the vision nor a thicker lens. The Sphere power is you power, the Cyl is the amount of astigmatism and the axis is just the where the astigmatism is. An astigmatism just means your eye is not perfectly round, it's a little bit more football shaped, it affects the way light travels through your eye. Most people have some amount of astigmatism. An interesting fact, a lot of kids are missed diagnosed as dyslexic when they have an astigmatism, it can affect letters, it's harder to tell a P from a B or a Q from an O if you have an astigmatism. From your RX, it does not say that your right eye is weaker, you have a quarter more power on the right cyl. but that is NOTHING in the optical world. Overall, it's pretty basic RX, nothing to worry about.

  3. what you're interested in it's called astigmatism.

Glasses prescriptions have the sphere and cylinder values - the sphere - has a single power in all meridians of the lens (that is the 050 in your case) - the cylinder - has a direction (orientation) - the axis value shows in degrees the meridian the cylindrical power will be in. it can vary from 0 to 180 degrees (in your case at 108 degrees for the right eye - the 2.00 power - and at 176 degrees the 1.75 power). (i have 90 and 5 for right and left eye - so quite different too. not to worry!)

  4. myopia of 50 degree for both sides. Astig for left side is 175 degree and right side is 200 with the axis is the curvery of 108 and 176. curvery is the shape of the eye.
