  1. The driver of a car involved in a crash which left seven people dead and two children fighting for their lives was a convicted drink-driver, it is believed.

Jason Brain, 35, was killed along with his three passengers as he attempted to overtake another car in the Cotswolds.

According to reports on Sky News, he received a five-year driving ban and was given two years' probation after a drink drive conviction in 2001. He also admitted driving without due care and attention, driving with no insurance and failing to stop after an accident.

Friday night's head-on crash also claimed the lives of a couple and their 34-year-old daughter who were in a VW Passat travelling in the opposite direction.

The horrific collision happened on the A429, between the Cotswold villages of Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.

A girl, nine and boy, 10, - who were in the back seat of the Passat - remain in hospital in Bristol.

Their grandfather, 53, who was driving the car, died at the scene. Their grandmother, 61, who was in the front passenger seat, died in hospital, followed by their aunt. All five people in the Passat are thought to be from Stow-on-the-Wold.

Four people in a Peugeot 306, which was attempting to overtake a Kia Sedona at the time of the crash, also died at the scene. Along with Mr Brain, they were a 31-year-old woman, and a 15-year-old girl, all from Moreton-in-Marsh, and a 20-year-old man from Chipping Norton.

A Gloucestershire Police spokesman said: "The 10-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl involved in the multiple fatal road traffic accident in Gloucestershire last night are continuing to receive treatment at hospitals in Bristol. Their families have requested that their condition remains a private matter."
