I have a current bank account with HSBC. I have opened another bank account (joint) with my bf. There isnt anything in it yet. I want to leave my old direct debits in MY account, but stuff for our flat, rent, bills etc, i want to come out as a direct debit from the joint one. Do I write to the bank and tell them to set up a direct debit of X amount or do i wait until my bills come in and set it through them? Im a bit confused.

  1. Usually you give your bank account info to the billing company, and they will charge your bank.  You might be able to setup automatic payments with your online banking, but I have actually never used that, so I don't know how it works with bills that change, like utilities.

  2. I don't know about the UK, but in the US all banks have some sort of BillPay system. You control how and when the bills are paid. Most banks don't chanrge for this service since it 'ties' you to the bank and you become a captive customer. Call your branch and see if they have billpay.
