ok, i asked this question earlier in R&S

http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApH9qqUb99WTCRlL_kR_3z0gBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080904102756AAw82Dv

and two people's comments stood out (i ignored all the "you are sinning against god" answers)

1) Bisexuals are "greedy".

2) <quote> "it's impossible to be bisexual, save s*x for marriage and be monogamous"

what is it that leads people to these ignorant and misinformed viewpoints? and what can we do to change them?

  1. I'm not sure how people can come to these assumptions, maybe they don't fully understand the concept, or think it is more than it is?

bisexuals being 'greedy' I don't actually understand, the only way I could think about it if you're saying you have a choice in sexuality is that bi's 'aren't picky'. IDK if anyone thought this insulting, this is just hypothetical.

You are only greedy if you want more than you have, e.g. cheat on whoever you are dating.

The second person, I have no Idea what they think bisexuality is, but their viewpoint is kinda screwed.

As to what leads tham to thier viewpoits; I'd say someone who doesn't fully understand bisexuality making stuff up to sound clever, and the information just going by word of mouth. I've no idea what they've heard but . . .

I'm sorry I can't think of anything to change peoples misinformed viewpoints, but I think you are starting to anyway by putting those additionall details in your other question!

Hopefully those two people will see the detail and figure out they are wrong!

  2. 1) people assume that because bisexuals are happy with a partner of either gender, they will automatically want one of each (the same train of thought leads to all bis being cheaters and polygamous)

    2) people think that to be bisexual you must be in a relationship with both genders i.e. 2 partners. they have not grasped that bisexual is to be attracted to both genders, not neccessarily to be with both at any one time

    hope that helped

  3. You cant change people. Let them be ignorant and miss out. You can't force someone to celebrate and appreciate diversity. If they choose to hate and be miserable, it's up to them.

  4. You won't be able to do anything to change their views.

So called "bisexuals" are generally regarded as g*y sexual perverts who would do anything to anything.

  5. People seem to have opinions and present them as fact. The best thing to do when that happens is challenge them and ask them to prove it. Since it's an opinion, they can't, since opinions are neither true nor false.

I don't know what leads people to that conclusion, probably what they've been taught by their parents.

Hopefully though, as the population of the world increases and more and more people have a bisexual person in their family, they will come to accept that it can happen.

  6. You won't and can't change these views. Everybody has an opinion and they're entitled to it.

Also, it depends in what sense both those things were said. The first statement is a generalisation, which isn't very nice. However, the same could be said for many people. I imagine the person who quoted it in the first place meant that bisexuals are greedy for opting to try relationships with the same and opposite s*x. Of couse, it isn't really greedy. Although, lots of people are greedy. You get lots of hetrosexuals who sleep around, who you could call greedy. Some people may be happy to be called greedy, and lots will admit it. So bisexuals can be greedy, but I'm not going to generalise like the person who said it that you've mentioned.

The second statement I half agree with. It's obviously not impossible to be bisexual, otherwise it wouldn't exist. I'm not a prude, and I have lots of bi and g*y friends, but most of the time my bi friends will admit that they have a preference. There's nothing wrong with the second half of the statement though. Lots of people don't believe in premarital s*x. It's a bit too late for me, but I think that saving youself for your spouse is a wonderful thing. That marriage we're talking about could well be between a g*y couple as well as straight. However, it's impossible to have a bi-marriage because you'd have to be married to the same s*x and the opposite. Being that you can only marry one person, your marriage would either be hetro or g*y.

  7. Its mainly religious people who think that, ignore them, there is nothing you can do to change it

  8. they are so ignorant to themselves, are so small-minded that they believe a couple of both s*x is universal.

these people need to wake up to todays society and realise that life isn't the way it used to be. it's modern that less people are condemning others for being who they are.

i have an open mind and respect any type of couple.

  9. The first one is... somewhat represented in our society - I've actually met people who'd want both a boyfriend and a girlfriend. Maslow would call that D-love, the type of selfish love, when you want to be loved and don't genuinely love someone else. Obviously, this does not apply generally, some people are bisexual and monogamous or focused on one "other" whom they really care for.

Then the second one... firstly, is being ignorant towards the possibility of people being bisexual and then simply "orders" whatever he/she believes in for various reasons.

You want to "change" this... Society changes all the time and, honestly, the best thing you could do is stand up for who you are and live the way you find best. No, that's not tiny, every little counts and it's the small things that make the big, whatever is big.

  10. well,if they mean greedy by always looking for more, sometimes is true,at least i kinda am like that;i am looking always for more experiences and meet new "s*x mates"...but the 2nd one is always possible, why not?i mean if str8 people can do it,why cant we?

oh,but i am not always into s*x btw,so dont look at me like a nymphomaniac or something like that...

  11. I guess they assume that bisexuals are greedy because they have the chance of liking every single person on the planet even though that is not the case.

If they had bisexuals as friends I'm sure they'd change their mind.
