  1. the backlight is a light source that is behind the liquid crystals, as the light passes through those crystals an image is shown on the display.  to prolong the life of your tv, always set the backlight level to the lowest setting that still gives you satisfactory display.  In general, the higher the level you operate at, the shorter the life of the display.

  2. An LCD does not generate its own light. They generally are back-lit with color corrected, full spectrum florescent tubes (a handful of LCD TVs are back-lit with LEDs). On each frame, the LCD themselves are then set to allow specific amounts of light to pass through each pixel. Setting the back-lighting adjusts the overall amount of light available to pass through the LCDs. The brighter the back-lighting, the brighter the image. The down side of setting the back-lighting high is that all LCDs leak some amount of light. The higher the back-lighting, the worse your black levels become. Set the back-lighting to your tastes and the characteristics of the room in which you view your TV (the brighter the room, the brighter the back-lighting).
