Could someone give me advice on a Warhammer 40k Tank?

I am getting one of those Space Marine Strike Forces next week, and it comes with a Whirlwind. My army could do without such a tank, but a Predator Tank could be invaluable.

How could I convert a Whirlwind into a predator?

-NOTE: Sponsons already acquired

  1. You can buy a Predator sprue from Games Workshop. All you need is the turret and sponsons. Go to the Games Workshop site for more information.

More practical is probably trading tanks with someone you play with. Maybe there is someone in your group who has a Predator they don't want and they need a Whirlwind.

  2. yes

if you find a way to scratchbuild the turret if you can buy it somewhere

  3. Well, there's no specific way to convert a whirlwind in to a predator using only the parts in the whirlwind kit.  Obviously, if you buy the predator kit you can get the turret off that, but this approach rather defeats the object - if you buy the predator kit you might as well build the Whirlwind and have two tanks!

You can look on eBay for a cheap Pred and rip off its turret.

You could try to scratchbuild a turret from plasticard (styrene sheet), tubing and lots of superglue and putty.  But this is a time-consuming and demanding task even for the most experienced modeller.

Finally, you could track down a 1/72 scale tank, such as a Challenger, Abrams or Leopard.  Nick the turret off that, assemble it and stick it onto the top of your Predator for something unique and distinctive.

Mind you, tank kits aren't much cheaper than Predator kits, so it's your call...

Frankly, I'd say "go with the Whirlwind".  They can do direct fire under the 5th edition rules and their multiple blast markers can be devastating even at short range.

  4. Like the above poster said, you can purchase a sprue from your local Games Workshop. They have a catalog you can browse through and the staff are usually pretty helpful. Meanwhile, depending on how strict you guys are at your shop, you could just declare the whirlwind a predator with your opponents permission until you get the real thing.
