Hi guys. I am looking for easy, step by step instructions on a single crochet or double crochet stitch. I think I am doing it correctly. When I look at websites to check if I am doing it right I get confused. Please don't laugh! Any help is really appreciated! Thank you!

  2. First, of course I am not laughing. Gracious.

I will explain the stitches, but it is really easier to get a book with pictures to show you, or find someone who is patient, and can show you the stitches. Check out churches or local crocheting groups. You can find these through Yahoo Groups, or possibly through http://www.meetup.com .

Anyway, when you look for books, look for books with simple, kids, children, or easy in the title. I have used these types of books, and it makes it a lot easier. Your local library should have a lot of these types of books. Look in the crafts section, or ask a friendly librarian for help.

I don't recommend buying books, because then you're spending money for something you may not like. Checking out books from the library or going on the web is a better way to find out what you need, in my opinion.

So, anyway, I will try to explain.

For single crochet, put your hook through the loop. wrap the yarn around hook once. bring the yarn back through. you now have two loops on your hook. wrap the yarn around your hook ONCE, and bring it through the first loop only. you will have two loops on your hook again. wrap yarn around hook once, and then pull the yarn through both loops. You did it!

For double crochet, wrap the yarn around hook once. Put the hook throught the stitch. Bring the yarn back through the stitch or hole. You will now have three loops on your hook. Wrap the yarn around your hook once. Bring yarn through the first two stitches only. Now you will have two stitches on your hook. Wrap yarn around the hook once, and then bring yarn through both stitches.

Also, if it makes you feel any better, when I crocheted my first afghan, the sides slanted outwards. The thing looked like it was about to take off! And when I first tried to crochet granny squares, they turned out like circles, and shapes with five sides, not four.

It just takes practice, and lots of pie and chocolate.

You might also search by "crocheting groups" in Yahoo groups, and you'll probably find a lot of support and help there.

You can also see examples of single and double crochet stitches at my web site, http://www.idontmatch.etsy.com . Part of every purchase benefits the local battered woman's shelter. Thank you!

    Don't worry. You'll get it! :) Have a super day! :)

  3. If you go here and click on the learning center it can show you the differances.

Hope this helps you understand better.  And there is a differance if you are using an old pattern or a new pattern.

A half double crochet and a single crochet have a differance in some patterns.
