I am 14 years old and am going into year 10 when this summer holidays ends. I am starting training for my local rugby team, I have been in the under 14's bracket and now i will be at the bottom of the under 16's bracket. I have been told it is a huge step and I would like some advice on what to do.

  1. Practice! Practice! Practice!

  2. If you are smaller than the rest then other skills aside from size and brutal impact will make the difference.

Your passing skills - learn to pass well both ways. Imagine yourself a a half back (scrum half) or five eighth and gain those skills intentionally.  Off loads in traffic matter as well but not stupid off loads

Increase evasion skills - steps, ducking, weaving, 'hit and roll'

    Increase your speed and stamina

Work of kicking skills - coversion kicking, grubbers, bombs etc.

Watch some of the great players ply their trade - on youtube - check out some of the aussies and kiwis. Then imagine, then practice, even by yourself.

  3. all the greats have had to play out of age or weight classes  its all about mental toughness. u didnt say which position you play   i think that it would affect you more as a front rower or number eight halfbacks are notoriously smaller players anyway and first fives can benefit being small and quick too. the biggest difference will be the weight and speed factor so if you are a fast winger at 14 you may be a slow winger in 16s it will become apparant in practices and if the coach is any good he will be abble to set u on right path

  4. At first, run sprints, and then jog for half an hour, slowly going up in time from there, to increase stamina. Then you can try the truly grueling, interval running, where you run certain number of time just jogging, then sprint for certain time, jogging, sprinting, etc. Scientifically, I don't know if weights are good for you. I lifted weights when I was younger than you, and my muscles are fine... Anyway, you can always increase strength with squats, sit ups, and push ups. I play union, but I think basic technique across both codes is the same. Learn to handle, pass, and kick the ball well, maybe asking the coach for some pointers, or checking out websites and Youtube and the like. Of course, also be sure to eat healthy and well. Depending on your position, you might need some bulking up! Anyway, good luck. Practice, and I'm sure you will do well.

  5. Try to make friends with everyone at your rugby team and that will really help. Also go out for a run maybe every 2 days if you can so you can build up stamina but take it easy at first and you will be able to play the game at your best for 80 mins (don't know if shorter for league I play union). Iwouldn'tt start working out until your about 17 because when your younger your muscles can't take it.(Justthoughtt I would tell you that justin casee you were thinking about it) Also if you have just started your coach will help you get better. I've been playing union for about 7 years so I should know
