I need a relatively cheap (40 - 80) power screwdriver...mostly for drywall s******g but possibly some heavier duty wood s******g and possibly some drilling. Any recommendations?

  1. I have been using a Ryobi One 18 volt cordless drill for over a year, have had no problems with it.  Can buy it at Home Depot, got mine with a flashlight, charger and two batteries for around $90.00.

  2. The one that most dry wallers use are either Milwaukee or Bosch s***w guns, which are different from a power drill.  The s***w gun has a clutch that engages the bit when it is pushed against the s***w.  Both of these are in the $200 range new but sometimes a used one can be found in a pawn shop.  Otherwise a cordless drill will do much of what you want, but 18 V units are a little too powerful for most use.  Ryobi and Makita and Dewalt are all good brands.  B&D is not worth the bother.

  3. Sorry to say that cheap and good do not usually go together. This is very true with this type of purchase.

You do not mention cordless, I assume thats what you want.

Check out the Bosch PS 20, its on sale for $95 with free shipping from my Amazon Affiliate store. Almost $80

We did a comparison of different kinds of drills here

The PS20 was not up to snuff for the heavy duty test we did but it will work fine for most light duty stuff.

  4. I assume you are looking for a cordless rechargeable drill/driver.  If you can afford any Bosch or DeWalt I would certainly recommend those.  However, if your use won't be that heavy, my 10 year old Black & Decker 12V Firestorm is still working just fine.

  5. for a chordless screwdriver, not a chordless drill, i use my old makita 9.6 volt drill. it's light weight and still capable of sinking a 3 inch s***w, on a full charge. point is, it makes a very handy light weight s***w gun.

as far as a serious chordless drill goes, milwaulkie, bosch, makita, dewalt, craftsman, are all good to great drills.

  6. If you're going to be doing drywall s******g and some heavier duty wood s******g, I would get an electric one (with a plug, not cordless), as the battery powered ones are heavier (due to the battery weight) and will not be as powerful. I love my Porter Cable, it's still going strong 20 years later.

Makita, Milwaukee and Porter Cable all make an electric drywall screwgun for $99. A decent cordless screwdriver/drill will cost you $200, will still be heavier, and you'll want to make sure you have extra batteries (more $$$). I still see drywall crews using Makita screwguns, which I always thought were  kind of cheap and 2nd rate when compared to the American brands, like Milwaukee and Porter Cable.

Don't get me wrong, I love the convenience of a cordless, but they're more expensive and heavier. I'd rather run an extension cord.

  7. Dewalt, but you'll have to pay more than that.

  8. I like my Craftsman 19v.
