Could someone help me with my snail?

I recently bought a Betta and a snail for my tiny tank a few months ago. I was a little worried that the snail had nothing to eat so I was getting concerned. I researched and found that they could eat veggies such as lettuce. Yesterday, I did a water change and put in a very tiny piece of romaine lettuce and a tiny piece of carrot on the bottom of the tank for him. He seemed so happy and ate a little. I removed the food later and everything was great. Today, I came home from work and I think the snail has died. Was it something that I did? I feel so bad about this because everything was great before. If someone could help me figure out what happen, I would appreciate it. Will my Betta get sick as well because of this? Help!

  1. maby the lettuce had pesticides on it

if it is an apple snail you can take them out of the water for feeding as they are amphibious

  2. What kind of snail is it?  The pest kind (ramshorn, Malaysian trumpet, etc) or Mystery/apple snail?

If it is a mystery/apple snail, they often curl up for naps (can last several days).  The best way to be sure with mystery/apple snails is to smell them.  There is no better recipe for nausea than a dead snail.

Also, he may not be napping, but hiding - bettas have been known to nip the snail's antenna.

The veggies are of no harm, I feed mine with similiar foods.

Snail diseases rarely affect fish, so I do not think you need to worry about your betta.

How big is your tank?  It may be too small for a betta and a snail (the betta should have min. 2 gallon tank, and a full grown mystery/apple snail requires 2 gallons).

Sadly, snails don't live for very long.  The pest variety only live for about 1-2 years.  Mystery/apples live for about 2-5 yrs.  They have often spent some time before getting to you and may not have long to live.

    Good luck.

  3. well first off do a water change to get anything out that the dead snail could have left behind. and he probably didnt have much to eat. they need algae.. the best thing to do would have been to get a cup or two of gravel from a well established tank (pet store or someone you know with a good tank) and put the gravel in the tank. this way the snail has some good junk to eat... so try it again with some 'dirty' gravel from a cycled tank.

    good luck =]

  4. what makes you think the snail is dead and did you wash or rince the stuff off first ?? the snail had enough to eat with the excess food

I would say your betta will get sick from this since I don't think the snail is dead but you have them in a bowl so water conditions could come into play and affect the betta
