There's a reason for them wanting your phone number. It's to prevent people of 18 or older getting in to Teen SL. In the past, Teen SL was pretty easy to get in to. Even though I am unaware of any specific cases of over 18s getting in to Teen SL, it was a system that was - potentially - open to abuse by paedophiles. A few things happened very close together. First, all mention of Teen SL was removed from the Adult SL site. Secondly, they implemented a system of identification on Teen SL where you either have to provide mobile phone numbers or proof of a PayPal account. If your phone service provider is one of those they recognise, you are lucky. There are people who can't join Teen SL, because their phone service is by a provider not on the list.

From what I have been able to learn from others who have used Teen SL, the information about your phone is to verify your age. Once that has been accepted, you get a text message sent to your phone with your authentication password. They do not pass this information on to anyone else and they do not spam your phone with offers. That's not what the makers of SL are into.

For these reasons, it's not a good idea to ask someone else to make up a Teen SL account for you. If you are between 13 and 17, talk to your parents about Teen SL and ask their advice based on the web page and my reply here.

I have only spoken to a couple of people who have come from Teen SL to adult SL (you automatically transfer up when you reach 18), but they have had no problems with giving this information. In fact, it's for your safety and to make sure you aren't going to be groomed by perverts.

If you are still dead set against the phone option, look at the PayPal option. Maybe your parents can help you set this up.
