Specifically, does the N4 route make the most sense and where are some good places to stop along the way (for food, facilities, driving break)? Also, going back would southern route through Limerick and then north east to Dublin city be worth it? Thanks in advance for your advice.

  1. The n4 makes the most sense.  However to get to it you have to go through the toll bridge on the M50 so try to time this for when it is not peak i.e. 7-9 am and 5-6.30 pm roughly.  The N4 is the national road and there will be plenty of places to stop.  Pubs are usually best if you want a sandwich and coffee or light lunch.

Going back Limerick is an okay city but hardly worth a detour. The distance is about 282 km and should take you about 3 or 4 hours.

Go to www.aaireland.ie go to the information box and click on route planning and you can get any option you like there.

    enjoy your trip.

  2. keep in near the hedges they crazy mad drivers there, but tis a lovely part of the country.

My advice: stay away from the regional roads (R)! You'll find garages for petrol and they usually have a shop where you can buy food on the national roads (N).

Unless you want to see Limerick (do you really?) don't bother taking the southern route.
