What is the object of auto racing? All they seem to do is drive around in circles. I don't want to offend any one but I wonder whats the point?

  1. its a thrill   if you like guys you like what they do

  2. For me The Formula is a great thrill! I always wonder about one thing: these drivers are so good, but ONE of them is the best after all, how he manages that? It's important to have a particular interest in a sport...

  3. In America they love Nascar because the fans are drunk all the time and so they divised this system to go in ovals so its easy to follow

F1 is the pinacle of autoracing and it doesnt go in circles

  4. The object is to win.

-And if you do win, you get millions of dollars and a chance for more with sponcerships.

-Another reason why they are not just driving around in circles is that they are driving at extremly high speed. They go up to 200 MPH and if you have never been going that fast, it is awesome.

-There is also the possibility of a wreck, and if they are not fatal, they are really cool and fun to watch. It is cool and the best part of the races.

-There is also the stratagy and settings of the car which are not as interesting but still contributes to the race.

  5. It's the same as baseball, except: All the teams in the league are on the field at the same time, there are no time outs unless somebody gets stupid and wrecks, the equipment costs a lot more, and the drug problem is non-existent for the most part because someone could get killed or injured.

Now as far as the conditioning the drivers and crew have to go through, try sitting in a sauna for three hours while maintaining your concentration. It's not that easy. For the pit crews, many in NASCAR are college athletes who didn't get drafted but are fit enough to pick up an 80 pound tire, throw it on the hub, pick up the old one, and throw it back over the wall while running at a sprint and wearing a fireproof uniform and wearing a helmet. And still some people claim they aren't athletes. Pit crews in other series are about the same as far as conditioning.

  6. Its simple really, you like what you like. I love the thrill of the chase, the sound, the smell, the atmosphere, the joy of your team winning, the tears when they lose etc etc. the buzz you get from watching baseball is the buzz we get when watching motor racing. it does help if you are a bit of a petrol head, but its not a necessity. my grandaughter loves it, she's 3. Formula one is the ultimate drive in the ultimate car

  7. Formula One does not go in circles.

    Nascar does.

The whole point is technology, performance and competition. The object is to win.

Not very different from other sports, is it?

  8. to win.. its like when you put on your make up.. it is to look good and to attract the best possible attention..

  9. For the same reason track and field stars run in circles at the Olympics, or swimmers swim back and forth in a pool.  It's human nature to compete.  I'd dare say it wasn't long from the time the first two automobile owners met each other, that a race ensued.

Of course not all racing goes in circles, road courses have left and right turns.  Oval racing is predominate in the US because the first automobile races were run on horse racing tracks.

For over 120 years, the automobile has for the most part summed up the pinnacle of engineered competitive sport, in Europe, America, and most of Asia the automobile not only symbolized mobility and power, but also leading edge technology.  In addition, automobile racing is familiar to us, nearly all of us have driven or drive cars, so we relate to the sport (even if in the most remote way)  Of course there are other forms powered racing, boats and airplanes for example, but they don't have the broad familiarity, or in most cases, are not accessible to most people.

There is also the "spectacle" of the sport, the speed, the sounds, the danger.  Not unlike gladiator games in the past, people (although most don't like to admit it) do enjoy the danger in the sport.  We don't wish to see people get killed or hurt, but the prospect of a crash does add dynamics to the sport.  For the most part, racing is much safer than in the past.  And unlike a lot of sports, safety has actually enhanced racing.  Drivers can "hang it out" with less fear of being burned alive, or killed on impact.

I personally love racing because of the team effort evolved, but yet the individual achievement by the driver, the technology of the cars, and the drama of the competition.

  10. well im in the same boat as you.  I see raceing as guys taking left turns all day.  but for it to be the biggest sport in the US makes you wonder.  Well im sure these drivers have a lot of skill and the technices they use cant be learned by everyone. or else everyone would do it.  It seems to me that you either love it or hate it.  Also a lot of people watch for the craashes

  11. its all about proving yourself. drivers have to react to driving contiditions on the road and before a race. A tweak of a fin that puts more down drift upon your front tires if it is wet gives you more traction. Stuff like that is what auto racing is about. If you are thinking nascar as in circles, i kind of agree. I personally like rally and F1 races for it is a lot more demanding.

Its just like any competition, the most skilled person wins (aside from having a little luck too ;) )
