Could someone please explain the case study: Marshal et al. - Social Mobility, 1988?

I have a sociology exam tomorrow and I need to know case studies, this case study keeps popping up in my books as a reference but it is never explained and I cannot find it on the internet. PLEASE someone explain:

- what were they trying to prove/disprove
