Could someone please explain why genetic research is so important to scientific and technological progress?

why it is mainly important to progress in the 21st century???

It would explain exactly how chemistry and biology work in the human body.  It is not just in the 21st century, but it has always been what people wanted - immortality.  Things like virus infection, cancer ... etc are not preventable, but genetic research could yield solutions at the cellular,  DNA / RNA levels, required to fix the many problems.
