Could someone please give a detailed explanation of 'emo'?

emo's hate themselves, whereas goth's hate everyone.

emo's want to kill themselves when goth's just.. wanna kill everyone. : ]

emo's also listen to good music such as 30 seconds, job for a cowboy, the used, alexisonfire, killswitch engage, underoath, etc..  that's all i can give you i'm afraid!

Basically it's short for emotional and that's basically what it is. It's an old genre but only now has it become a fashion statement etc.

It's a descriptive for music that supposedly has more emotion than most (generally negative emotion).

It's lately become a stereoype and  a scene for teenage kids generally of the age 13-21.

A typical scene "emo" would probably be defined as skinny, heavy fringe/bangs, black, brown or peroxide blonde hair, often with extentions or multicoloured. Boys usually have a large fringe and poker straight hair, usually feathered at the frame of the face, girls: heavily layered with a sh.it load of hairspray.

Heavy eye make up on both sexes, very bold and imaginative.

Clothes are usually divided between two fashions - "emo" or "scene".

"Sceners" are usually outgoing, luminous, obsessed with booze and/or energy drinks, whether ACTUALLY consumed is another matter...

Incorporate children's icons into life as much as possible eg. Hello Kitty.

Are obsessed with the 90's and will usually describe themselves as "retro".

Like to think of themselves as "gangsta".

Take pride in being popular (defined as having millions of Myspace friends as opposed to real friends).

Worship internet"superstars" such as transvestite, Jefree Star and model, Audrey Kitching.

Like to use words such as "mate" and "blood" (as a referance to a friend, not a kind gesture of donation)

Music - The multi-talented Jefree Star, Hollywood Undead, "Techno", Stuff with alot of beat, synthetic sound effects, and rap, also known as "chav music", were it to come from the speakers of anyone else.

Emos -

Take pride in the painful aspects of their life, eg.

Inability to get a girlfriend/breaking up with the love of their life,

Being unpopular,

Being bullied,

Stray hairs.

Write deep, meaningful poetry that reflects their daily struggle with living. Usually full of imagary to show just how deep and sensitive they truly are.

Like the colour purple.

Music - Anything that sounds in pain, Dashboard Confessional (classic), Bright Eyes, Jimmy Eat World.

However, this is just a generalization, there are many variables in emo culture.

And no, i am not launching an attack on emos. I probably fit into many of those categories, myself. However this is what i feel the general perception of an "emo" is. It doesn't necessarily mean i agree with it. In fact, i'm totally aposed to the whole emo stereotype. But deal with it.

Emo is a youth subculture which is centered around alternative "emotional" rock music... thus the name Emo.  Commonly associated with emo are stylistic aspects such as androgenous dress and hairstyles for boys and girls, often the haircuts are a little on the messy side, and may cover one eye.  People associate "cutting" with being Emo, but this is not that common an activity among the subculture... some research suggests that it is no more common with "Emo" kids than with any other group.  Basically , it's really about the music, clothing, hair and make-up styles, and often fairly dark poetry.  Hope that helps!

Emo, is short for emotional. Simply meaning everything said and done around them affects them deeply. A person who is pessimistic about life and can never let go of the past. Someone who may eventually turn into what we call "gothic", a believer in satan.

Emo is short for emotional. Emo's are normal people. We are simply depressed and misunderstood. Some emos cut but not all. Emos aren't out to impress anyone we are just us.A lot of emos can just get over there problems, so not all are depressed. We are still normal people who deserve respect just like anyone else.

emo is kinda like a person that feels so different that they cant stand it and they aren't very happy most of the time. but im not entirelly sure how to explain it... :)
