  1. It really varies by jurisdiction and size of jurisdiction, but I can give a brief outline.

If it is a big city, there will be lots of trials going on in different courts.  You will go to a big room where all the potential jurors first go.  Then eventually, you will be taken up to a court room with ABOUT 35-40 other people.

From there it all depends on how the judge does it.  Sometimes, they will sit only 12 people in the jury box.  If they do it this way, all the other people will remain in the courtroom.  The judge then asks questions of all the jurors.  Then the attorneys ask questions.  If at any time, someone gets kicked off the jury, one of the other potential jurors will take his place in the jury box.

The other way to do it, is for the judge to place 24 or so, depending on the circumstances, in the jury box.  Again the judge asks questions and then the attorneys.  In this circumstance, only when a juror gets removed for cause will another potential juror take his place.

This process to choose the jury can last only half a day.  If a big case like a death penalty case, it can last several days.

In a big city, if you get kicked off the jury, you have to go back to the jury pool and wait and see if they send you to another courtroom to go through the process again.

In small counties, you will only be there for that one trial.  Therefore, if you get kicked off the jury at any time, you get to go home.

  2. Well once at the court house you will all be seated in the jurors area, the defense prosecuting attorney's will take turn asking you question about different things, these will be short questions and you will not have time for a book or Nintendo, nor will they let you bring them in.

This process could take as little as 1 hour or all day depending on the amount of people they have for selection.

But, they have already preselected most of the people prior to you coming back, by the use of questionnaires that you filled out and your race, s*x and ages. I know that sounds like discrimination but they want to make sure that they get the right age group because they people are known to have set ideas and way that differ from those older and younger.

The same goes for s*x and color, They are not likely to pick 12 white people while trying a black man or are they going to pick all men in a women's rape trial.

So the best suggestion is to sit back and relax, and hope that you aren't in the profile of the people they want.

    Best of luck.
