Ive just started to learn crochet from a book I made a baby beanie yesterday. Im now trying to do a bib im just stuck on the pattern where it says Ch 1, working in back loops *[1 sc in next st, ch 1] twice, skip 1 st, 1sc in next st, ch 1 rep from*.

Ok so i know what the st are i dont understand it when it says to skip and also where it says ch 1. Its all so confusing if skip means to skip the next stich then my works getting smaller when im sopose to be working outwards as im doin a bib starting from the centre.

  1. Like Clare said.  The ch1 replaces what ever the neighboring stitches are.  Like a place-holder or like a dental bridge--heh.

They make your work less dense & keep the same number of stitches in the row.  On the next row, depending on the pattern, you usually either work a single stitch in the chain like you do in the beginning chain, or sometimes you work several stitches in the space (not the stitch--the SPACE) such as what they call a shell stitch.

  2. Skip does mean to skip the next stitch.  Ch 1 means chain one.  Your work won't get smaller, because even though you'll skip stitches, you'll also be adding stitches with the chain 1's.
