  1. i have never heard of that brand before i have 2x 50hp tohatsu motors and there perfect nothing wrong with them. you shoud check how much hours are on them they may need reconditioning.  or you may need to buy a new motor to be safe.  do you know what stroke it is?

  2. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON"T BUY IT . They dont even make a good ankor !!!!!

  3. I don't normally disagree with Capt. Bill or jtexas for that matter, however I've got plenty of experience with the Force Motors.  Capt. Bill has the history down, but my conclusion is a little different.  Chrysler built this motor for years, before Bayliner re-branded.  Then Mercury built basically the same motor  for several more years.  The gear housing was considered bullet proof.  The electronic ign. Is dependable.  The carbs. have been unchanged for over 20 years.  The failures is in the power head, and in my experience it was from the same, lack of maintenance that you find in  Mercury or OMC or any other brand...... Now having said that, your looking at an old motor, so take special care to check it out, even if you have to remove the inspection ports and pull the heads.  Just go ahead and rebuild the carbs.  Be sure you understand the do's and don't of the ign. system..  If you take good care of this engine, it will run dependably for years.  Good Luck!!!!!

  4. The Force Outboard brand started in the early 1980's when the parent company of Bayliner Boats, purchased the  Chrysler Outboard motor factory.  Bayliner was the first company to introduce a "packaged boat" in which the outboard motor, the boat and a trailer were sold as a single item. Arriving at dealerships fully assembled ready to go.  These "packages" were great money & timesavers for dealers that previously had to put all the pieces together to custom rig boats with specific engines, accessories, and trailers.  Although Bayliner lacked the technological sophistication of the major outboard motor brands, their price advantage (cheap boat & cheap engine combined with "packaged" all in one - "boat, motor, trailer," deals was significant - and literally ten's of thousands of families discovered their love for boating through these cheap (oops, I should say "inexpensive") Bayliner boats.

In the mid-1980's US Marine (parent company of Bayliner) was acquired by Brunswick Corporation who owns (Mercury, Mercruiser, Sea Ray, etc.). The Force Outboard motor itself - was quickly redesigned and benefited from added quality resources of Mercury.

In fact, things at Bayliner were so bad, Brunswick moved all  production of Force outboard motors to Mercury's plants. At that point, Force Outboards became available on boat brands other Bayliner at dealerships nationwide. Soon enough however Mercury discovered Bayliners already existing "bad reputation" for boats and motors was inseparable from the Force motor - and this resulted in Mercury's decision to discontinue the Force brand in 1999.

So...  If your motor was built between 1987 and 1999 chances are it is a good one (least wise, as good as any Mercury Outboard).  Parts on the motors built for this period of time are avaliable through Mercury and probably will be for at least as long as you care.  If however the engine is pre-Mercury and came from Bayliner, those motors had a very bad reputation and finding parts has already become an issue.

    Happy & Safe Boating!

  5. Capt John got it right as usual.

Myself, I'd be content with a mercury force, but that's it.

Whichever engine you end up with at a minumum do a compression test, if the lowest cylinder isn't within 5% of the highest, walk away.

If the boat's on a trailer, ask the owner to start it.  If he does so without hooking it up to water, walk away.  He hasn't taken care of the motor.

  6. No, Force is not a good brand and they have not been in business for some time now. You would have a very hard time getting parts if you needed them, find another boat or repower that one.
