Could someone please tell me what is going on in Salvadore Dali's "Idylle Atomique"?

I've tried to find a good interpretaion on the web, but no luck. Anyone un derstand what is going on in this painting?

It looks to be a depiction of life in Spain at the start of the Spanish Civil war in the 1930s (hence the German Henkel bomber dropping bombs).  Part of the population thinks everyone is safe (e.g. the baseball players and the guy sliding into home base), but at the same time not all is well.  Darkness ensues and chaos is starting to reign.

The Spaniard observer (perhaps Dali himself) is looking from the sidelines in shock.

That's my take on it, anyway.
