For many, many years zookeepers around the world kept trying to get platypuses to mate without success.  As technology advanced and new tests became available, it was discovered that all of the platypuses in captivity shared the same venereal disease.  They cured the disease with antibiotics and platypuses now mate and reproduce in captivity.
