Question:

Could someone provide me with a soy-free alternative to miso?

I'm not going to get into a debate over whether or not soy is good for you. Suffice to say it is my personal belief based on research that it isn't, and so I'm looking to cut it out of my diet. However, I'd like for this not to involve sacrificing dietary diversity. Could anyone recommend a palatable alternative to miso other than just dumping a pound of salt into everything? There's got to be SOMETHING out there that tastes similar and isn't estrogenic!

All the searching I've done thus far has only yielded salt as an alternative. While we're at it, if you have any good alternatievs to soy sauce, that would be appreicated as well.

Many thanks in advance,

D S

  1. In Singapore, we get a soy free miso made from chickpeas.

It is called chickpea miso.  My friend is allergic to soy products and uses chickpea miso.  I have tasted it myself in her food and it is delicious.  I think you should also be able to buy this in the US or maybe through the internet.  You should try it, it is good.

They also have brown rice miso, corn miso and barley miso.  Please visit this website:

  2. Eat vegetable soup.
