I am being admistratively discharged from the marine corps. I think the classification is going to be general, under honorable conditions. How do I approach the VA about benefits. The reason for the seperation is because of depression caused by the military. And with this classification of general under honorable, can i still work for city and state jobs?

  1. If you are being discharged for a mental health condition then you should be getting a medical discharge.  Since you are not,  I think you are being discharged for having an attitude problem about service.

With a general discharge you are eligible for some VA benefits.  I would suggest you go to the VFW,  American Legion or DAV and ask to speak with a service officer.  They can fill you in and help you apply for benefits.

  2. I am a former Marine discharged honorably for a personality disorder caused by service. I went and scheduled an appt. with a VA Dr. They assesed my situation through an interview (very long) and some testing ( An MMPI). I am 30% disabled through the VA. Don't let others get you down about this. If you are not mentally fit, it is better you not serve. You have already accomplished what so many can not. You will be a Marine for life. I miss my life as a active duty Marine every day, so make sure this is something you won't regret. Stay motivated and good luck!

  3. Take them your DD-214. They will take care of it from there.
