Could someone translate the following words found found on an old etching?

Yes it is Italian, and translated , means Sale, around 624 million ( of whatever the money was around that time)  My nearest guess would be about 2 dollars!  But bearing in mind the age etc I think in today's value it would be possibly worth $200, it would cost about $250 to get the age certified, not a very good deal?

                                       Just joking, I couldn't resist, sorry. I really don't have a clue.
