Question:

Could someone with a Nursing degree get a job in Japan?

I'm told Japan, much like quite a lot of other Western nations has a big shortage of nurses, and thus there are a lot of openings abroad for international nurses to come and fill jobs, and a lot of countries often fast-track Nurses for visas.

Would a white British person with a Nursing degree stand any chance of getting a job in Japan, and thus being sponsored for a visa? I understand Japan is pretty much a monolingual country, so, would I be required to be proficient in Japanese to even stand a chance of getting a job, or would I be considered on the condition I learn Japanese?

Do I stand much of a chance, or should I look elsewhere?

  1. Does being a WHITE british nurse qualify you for something special? LOL.. Not in Japan honey!

  2. Things might change in the future as Japan has begun hiring a lot of nurses from Indonesia and the Philippines this year, for the first time since the war ended. So I don't think it's entirely impossible, but I don't think it's a great idea either. Asking a question like this just goes to show you have no idea what it's like to live as a foreigner in a monocultural society like Japan.

  3. I was stationed in japan with the u.s. navy and you can try getting a job in a u.s. base.  you may check with the DoD website.  a lot of nurses have gone to irak, so they need new ones to take care of the family members left behind.

  4. You might be able to get a job teaching English.

This question has been asked many times before. And the answer is no. You would have to graduate from a Japanese school. And to do that you would need to be able to speak, read and write Japanese at an above average level.

You heard wrong. Most Japanese don't speak English.

Degrees from one country are usually of little value outside of that country.
